The day before Miwa’s birthday. After surfing overly long I embarked on an epic tidy. It involved

  • taking down some unused curtains
  • putting another bookshelf in
  • pretty much emptying the cupboard
  • sorting through the boxes
  • putting everything back in the cupboard
The upside was 5 empty boxes that had been full, plus a bookshelf-full of books from storage. The resulting space will fit three boxes of (large) photo albums plus other stuff of Miwa’s. Cool!

Highlights of the surf were finally visiting a bunch of weblogs and bookmarking them (oh no! now I’ll have to read them ;-), including Dive Into Mark, Dave Hyatt’s Surfin’ Safari, fellow kiwi Matthew Thomas’ MPT, Brad Choate, Hack The Planet, and Joel On Software. I’ll get to Dave Weiner, Doc Searles and Joi Ito tomorrow.

As an aside I should have realised something was up when I saw the “Powered By Movable Type” logo on Neoteny’s site (Joi Ito is Neoteny’s founder and CEO). I’ve been trying to work out which of the three or four charsets are good for Japanese, and how to declare a page with multiple languages. I came to Neoteny via whoever did their design (which was probably just the logo), and thought “strange - this isn’t just the typical ugly message from the Shacho”. Still in the dark on language issues - it looks like UTF-8 is the way to go (any Japanese character set will prompt for a 2-3MB download for Windows users), but I don’t know anything about legacy browser support. Or indeed anything about Japanese browsers, and their undoubted quirks and bugs (sigh). Or even where to find this info in English or Japanese…

Anyhow time for bed (you’d realise it was if I was '7eet enough to make a new Unix locale based on en_GB but in the JP timezone. Oh well, maybe tomorrow).
