Fax or all-in-one Home Office?

Internet, why has thou forsaken me?? I’m in a big dilemma about whether to buy a basic monochrome fax (like a Sharp Fappy - Fax makes it happy) or a Brother MyMio (a colour fax/inkjet/scanner/photocopier that Miwa insists on calling MammaMio, oh it’s a phone too). I’ve searched but haven’t found a single review, not even a comment from a purchaser. I’ve been to three electronic shops and none of them were able to tell me anything about scan or print quality, except to show me the sample pages from Brother. Of course none of these shops has thought to print out a standard calibration image - duh. Hell, I can’t even find a review in a magazine. I guess it having been released a month ago doesn’t help, but surely someone has bought one??

I think we’re gonna go for twice the price and five times the features, but it’s scary to do so without any of the background knowledge I’d usually have for a tech purchace. I didn’t realise how much better a search engine was compared to a shop assistant, at least when the shop assistant’s knowledge only stretches to using the cash register. And in Japan, that’s pretty much all of ‘em. Unfortunately there’s just nothing out there this time.

To make matters worse, there’s no law or system allowing you to take back a product that doesn’t work for you, unless the product is actually broken. So if I buy something and it turns out to be a (functional) lemon, I’m screwed. This compounds nicely with the shop assistants who when pressed can read you the promotional material :/ Wish me luck!
