Snorkeling and Senbei

To Diary

I’ve been spending a lot of time at the beach recently. The weather has been very hot and humid, so it’s been perfect for snorkeling. Miwa and I went down to the south of Shima-gun today and snorkeled just past Wagu. We saw a lot of fish, including some tiny vibrant blue tropical ones. I also found a strange shell; it looked like a sea urchin shell but was much larger and oblong. There were indentations in it that looked like a starfish. I suspect it might be the shell of a kind of sea slug we saw.

I start teaching at the Senbei factory tomorrow, which should be fun. There was a kick-ass lightning storm last night in the hills around Watari, and we could see the sky light up in the distance from the apartment. Apart from that life is quiet, quiet and hot.

I came across your post while doing a “senbei search” today. Are you by chance teaching at Masuya in Obata-cho?

I work for Masuya. We have a USA subsidiary here in California. I was in Mie-ken last summer doing some translating & what not for the company.

Were you a JET? I was a JET in Fukushima-ken from ‘97 to 2000.

If you’re teaching at Masuya, please drop me a line!

Take care,
Jana
