To The ‘Net
I just came across an interesting web service: the whois.sc Domain Explorer. Although it’s intended for finding domain names to buy, the Domain Explorer is great to let you know how many other people have similar domain names. For example, apparently 1738 domain names (irrespective of suffix) contain the word “google”. It also shows you what domain name + suffix combinations are in use, parked or have been registered in the past. In contrast there are only 10 domain names containing “boblet”, 36 containing “tawawa” (probably due to Ottowa and Petawawa in Canada), and 2 containing “bastish”. Clicking on a registered domain name shows a very detailed whois lookup, including server and ISP information. You can even see how many websites the server is hosting — a scary 296 for the server my website is on.
There is also some interesting stuff in Internet Statistics (there are presently 35,025,506 active domain names with the six main suffixes). Cool.

That “WhoIs” threw me for a moment or two: Whols? Never heard of that. Serif fonts can have their advantages.
But yeah, Whois. They’ll ask you to register after the first twenty search queries or so, just to make sure you’re not a robot.
I’m still waiting for the good people of Tawawa.com to come up with their “commercial information site”.
Netcraft is another fine resource for your poking needs.
What is a “boblet”, by the way? Sounds a bit like a tiny Robert.

Good point — I’ve changed the relevant “i”s. I’ll have to put a style switcher in here soon (with an easy-to-read big serif option).
What is a boblet? That is a long and involved story. Don’t worry, it’s not that interesting ;-)

I found http://www.webmasterpanel.com which got some real nice domain name and webmaster tools.
