Gregory Narain recently wrote about why he thinks non-crufty URLs are overrated. He was kind enough to use an article of mine as a source, so I felt compelled to write a reply. While I agree with some of what he says, I don’t agree (and can’t understand) his conclusion.
I think this kind of over-analysis marks me as a perfect candidate for some kind of ‘semantic wonk/geek’ committee position. sigh :-/

I recently went to eat Fugu・(河豚) with Miwa and her parents — it’s always good to have potentially fatal experiences together ;-) Here’s a description, some photos and some information about blowfish.
Results; non-fatal (this time! phew ;-), interesting, but not as amazing as the price would suggest.

In design school a critique is a valuable (although potentially scary) way of improving your design ability through peer review. In the real world criticism is a dirty word from which nothing good can come. Paul Scrivens does a design critique, and the real world leaves comments.

I’ve made several small changes here recently, including automatic acronym tagging, fixing issues when using HTML in comments, and sending XML to compliant browsers.
From here on in I have several improvements in the works, including a redesign (the sooner the better!). I don’t even think I can call it a redesign actually — a design perhaps? ;-) This year I hope to post more frequently, write more about Japan and living here, and make this a more visually interesting weblog. Here we go!

Recently I’ve been having fun watching PiNMeN and Popee the Performer on TV. They’re both CG animation series from Japan that rely solely on the animation (no dialog). Very strange, and very funny!

In Japan cheesecake is a light, fluffy dessert that tends to flavourless. I wanted to remember what a cheesecake based on cookie crumbs, real fruit topping, and cheese tasted like. Behold, the Cherry Cheesecake! (warning: to be avoided by dieters everywhere ;-)
